2nd TriKidz Clinic 14 June 2008
The kids were already at the UPNM pool as early as 7am. All sorts of cute little bikes could be seen at the transition area .... including one kick-scooter which was owned by a very proud 5 year old. Very cute indeed. This time around a proper bike rack was installed in the transition area thanks to the ingenuinity of the UPNM students (TriKidz thanks you).
Our two ITU-certified (International Triathlon Union) coaches : coach Ungku Azhar and coach Stephanie Chok didn't waste anytime taking the kids into the pool and teaching the basics of swimming. Coach Azhar who himself an Ironman triathlete and a Johor state swim coach took over the little ones. The slightly older and better swimmers were taken under the guidance of Coach Stephanie, herself a national triathlete and ex-national cyclist.
After the swim, the kids boarded their bikes with coach Stephanie showing the proper technique to mount and dismount the bike during competition. They were also taught proper cycling technique and certain skills for both better performance and safety.
Eventhough the sun was becoming too hot, the kids were really excited and seemed to want to know more. The parents however ran under the shade for safety from being too black.
The next lesson was the transition. The kids were taught how to set up their own transition area which involves laying out the shoes, helmet, socks and clothes properly on the ground for a faster and efficient transition. It is important to teach triathletes at an early age the importance of a quick transition as it sometimes can determine between winning or losing. Some adults and seasoned triathletes just take too long in transition.
Just before noon the class was taken to the padang for running lessons done by coach Azhar. Indeed everybody can run but not everybody runs in proper form. Which is why it is important to have a proper coach to correct running posture and running technique so that running becomes efficient which also translates to better running economy. Proper technique also helps prevents injuries. All in all, it is better to teach the kids early so that they dont develop bad habits later on as they grow up which in the long run will be very hard to correct.
By noon the whole clinic was done with the kids all thirsty, hungry and looking exhausted. Lunch was provided at the nearby cafeteria.
For this clinic, kids were given goodie bags from PowerBar which contain PowerBars, PowerGels, Recovery/Endurance drinks, towel and a temporary PowerBar tattoo for the race. Trikidz would like to thank PowerBar, Milo and Nestle for supporting us.
Tomorrow morning will be the race. We hope the kids will be fully rested as they have a big day ahead. It will be exciting. We cant wait. Bye.
